3 Thesis Statements

1.) The American troops in Iraq did not want to be a part of the war anymore so they tried to create more violence to show everyone that the occupation was not working.

2.) If the people in Iraq had gone with what the Americans were trying to do, the occupation would have ended much quicker, and the Iraqi government would have become stable much quicker.

3.) Riverbend uses her computer as a way to let out her frustration and fear, because she is so knowledgeable, she enjoys seeing her views out on the internet for people to see, and finds joy in it.

Baghdad Burning Themes

The theme that I chose to talk about is women's rights.  Throughout her blog, Riverbend mentions women's rights and how women are not being treated fairly.  Here are some examples of this.

"Females can no longer leave their homes alone.  Each time I go out, E. and either a father, uncle, or cousin has to accompany me."(16)

"Others are making their daughters, wives, and sisters wear a hijab.  Not to oppress them, but to protect them."(17)

"His eyes stayed glued to A.'s face as he told me that females weren't welcome right now-especially females who 'couldn't be protected'"(24)

"More and more females are being made to quit work or school or college."(68)

"What rape victim is going to go, in our current situation, file a complaint?... Besides that, women are to ashamed to make rape public, and why bother when you just know the person will never be caught-when no one is going to bother to look for the aggressor?"(68)

"I lived in jeans and cotton pants and comfortable shirts. Now, I don't dare leave the house in pants."(17)

"It's also depressing because of what it signifies-that no female is safe, no matter how high up she is..."(75)
